There’s Always a Maiden Voyage …

My introductory contribution to Substack

A vintage travel poster of the ocean liner Titanic

Dear Guest,

I think I’m supposed to write some sort of autobiographical sketch to give everyone an idea of who I am and all that kind of thing, but that will take time that I don’t have right now, as I am in a bit of a hurry.

I will try to get around to an introduction sooner or later, if you don’t mind, but I really feel as if I should get on with the task at hand, which I shall now explain.

You see, I promised my friend — BB, who helped me get this account set up — that I would post an article before last weekend, and I failed to do so. In order to get at least something on my feed, I asked if he would mind if I used an item I’d written a few years ago after another friend — this time it was Carol — asked me to share a few reminiscences of the Christmases of my youth.

Although I suspect he was somewhat put off by the idea of being served cold seconds, BB graciously acquiesced to my plea, and that is why you will soon have a “vintage” article as my first substack offering.

Being somewhat ignorant of substack protocol, I don’t know if I should apologize for its length. I tend to stray down rabbit trails, and there are a few in this post. I do think, however, that they were necessary, as I think they are relevant, even if somewhat remotely, to my feelings regarding The Wicked Trio. (You’ll find out.)

To spare your being completely overwhelmed by the length, I may divide it into two or more parts. That is, I MAY do that (although I recently learned that the Editor — or some such feature of Substack — will flag a post if it is too long…forcing me to break it into more than one part. Anyway, it won’t be my fault).

In the meantime, I do hope you will read what I have posted, and that you’ll be entertained enough to hope for more.

Yours,

Horton
